* PAMELA BLOTNER has created a gigantic sculpture of a life-size bronze Leatherback Turtle, La Tortuga, to be displayed in Costa Rica. The 500-pound, 7’ x 5’ x 3’ sculpture, a gift from the Cinco Hermanos Fund, will be installed near the entrance to Costa Rica’s Las Baulas National Park.

* CYNTHIA HANDEL will be showing new work at Lireille gallery, 3980 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, March 11 to April 23. Opening Reception: Friday, April 1, 5:30 to 8:30 pm. * The Arts Council of Mendocino County and the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens are preparing to present a third annual exhibition of sculpture on the grounds of the Botanical Gardens. Visitors are able to view and enjoy the artwork in an intimate, natural setting, connected by meandering paths and quiet walkways. The next unveiling of the sculpture in the gardens will be June 4, 2011, and will feature a rotating collection of artwork for sale. Deadline: March 15, 2011. * Axis Gallery in Sacramento is sending out a call for entries for its 6th National Juried Exhibition, which will open in August. Entry deadline is May 28, 2011. The Juror is Dena Beard of the Berkeley Art Museum and the space, itself, is next door to the Arts Commission gallery so there's lots of cross pollination on opening nights. They are especially looking for sculpture, but I don't think the space could hold many installations. Go to the Axis website: www.axisgallery.org.

1* 17th ANNUAL BANCROFT SCULPTURE IN THE GARDEN - June 17 – July 17, 2011

The Ruth Bancroft Garden is a world-renowned collection of succulents, cacti and drought tolerant plants. It is a spectacular backdrop for sculpture to be displayed throughout the garden. Now in its 17th year, Sculpture In The Garden is a month-long exhibit. The show includes 40 – 50 sculptors displaying multiple pieces during the month-long event. Nearly 1,000 visitors attend during the Kickoff Weekend alone. Art sales average $35,000 each year, with work priced below $1,000 accounting for the majority of sales. Works Gallery, San Jose and Disjecta Gallery, Portland

Works Gallery, San Jose and Disjecta Gallery, Portland: Ama Torrance, Peter Hiers, and Pam Dernham are going to submit proposals for Pac Rim to have exhibits at Works/San Jose Gallery and at Disjecta Gallery in Portland. Works Gallery has a great space and would give our group more exposure in the South Bay. Disjecta is a contemporary arts organization in Portland that provides studios, resources, and exhibition space for all disciplines of the arts community. It is one of the organizations that started Portland's Modern Zoo, which is a huge summertime festival that draws in galleries, open studios, performance events, everything. Taking our work to new places is great for us as artists and is not a bad resume thing, either. The show will be juried by Michael Cane, Director and Curator at The Schneider Art Museum, on the campus of Southern Oregon University, in Ashland, Oregon, just over the border from Yreka. There is a website in honor and memory of PacRim friend and colleague Richard Knight, who passed away over a year ago: Mikeandphilonthehill.blogspot.com. Mike and Phil were special friends for many years and when you go there you get directed to a site devoted to Richard. It has images of many of his pieces, some of which were displayed in PacRim shows. It also mentions his book, Saarinen's Quest, and has information about how people can order one or go to local libraries to see a copy.

THE RUTH BANCROFT GARDEN SHOW

FEATURES DAVID MUDGETT

This year the Bancroft Sculpture Show will showcase the work of PRSG member David Mudgett as the featured artist. The show is sponsored by The Ruth Bancroft Garden and by Walnut Creek’s Artscape Gallery and Sculpture Garden. A portion of the proceeds goes to the preservation of this nationally acclaimed garden.

The other Pac Rim members who are in this year’s show include, Carol Wedemeyer, Kim Webster, Charles H. Stinson, Betty Rasicot Pillsbury, John Oldani, Kristin Lindseth Rivera, Kate Ruddle, Jiajun Lu, Philip Lange, Michelle Gregor, Rebecca Fox, Christopher Dworin, Kris Borchardt, Tim Beck, Ted Bayer, and Mary Bayer.

The three-acre garden provides plenty of space and a warm backdrop in which to show both large and smaller work.

The Garden is located at 1500 Bancroft Road, just north of Ygnacio Valley Road, in Walnut Creek. Directions can be found at www.ruthbancroftgarden.org or by calling the garden at (925) 944-9352.

A fundraising preview reception to meet the sculptors will be held on Friday, June 15, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. It usually is a sold-out event with tickets costing $50 per person. Participants and one guest are not charged. General public viewing of the show is Saturday, June 16, and Sunday, June 17, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is a $10 garden admission fee. Children under 12 are free.

Good news - our new chairperson, Ruth Goldstein, has invited Kenneth Baker, art critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, to be the speaker at the next general meeting. Details: Monday, April 16. Hunter's Point Shipyard, Building 101, auditorium. I am happy to report that the evening was a big success.

CCA: A Legacy in Studio Glass

Founded in 1967 by Marvin Lipofsky (PRSG member), the studio glass program at California College of the Arts was one of the first in the United States. “CCA: A Legacy In Studio Glass” focuses on the important contributions made by four decades of CCA faculty and alumni to the American studio glass arts movement. The exhibition, featuring the work of 37 artists, is on view January 26-April 8 at San Francisco Museum of Craft+Design, 550 Sutter Street in San Francisco, and is held in conjunction with the celebration of California College of the Arts' 100th anniversary.

Bring a dish and/or beverage to share; potluck starts at 6:00 PM, meeting starts at 7:00 PM. Also, members are encouraged to bring 5 slides of works for all to view.
